October 19, 2006 marked a major milestone for MSU’s Office of International Studies and Programs (ISP) – the 50th anniversary of its founding. President John Hannah appointed Glen Taggart as the first dean of international programs on October 19, 1956, creating the first such post at a major U.S. university. Hannah’s vision of MSU as a land-grant university for Michigan and the world was already becoming a reality through faculty and administrator involvement in major technical assistance projects around the world, including Okinawa, Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam. The establishment of a dean-level unit to encourage and support international activities and involvements made explicit the institutional priority of internationalization that has broadened and deepened steadily since that time.
As ISP begins its second 50 years, President Lou Anna K. Simon seeks to build on her predecessors’ visions of MSU as a globally-engaged university. Expanding MSU’s international reach is one of the five strategic imperatives of her Boldness by Design initiative as MSU seeks to become the model for the 21st Century “world-grant” university. Given this history ISP has a proud legacy of international engagement, but we need to sustain and further advance this record of accomplishment, especially given how much more interconnected the world is becoming. We need your help to augment existing support for the important work of our centers and institutes, study abroad programs, international students and scholars, and other programs and initiatives. Whether it be contributions for study abroad scholarships, faculty development grants to further internationalize curricula, endowed faculty chairs in world regions, lecture series, or other purposes, your support for ISP's mission is crucial to our continued success. For more information about International Studies and Programs at MSU, we suggest you visit the ISP home page at www.isp.msu.edu. We invite you to consider making a designated gift to a specific ISP center, program, or existing fund, or to make an unrestricted gift to ISP, allowing us flexibility to embark on new initiatives and respond to pressing needs. Whatever your choice, we thank you for your interest in our activities and for your continued support!
