Alumni Lifelong Education—Evening College
Since 1951, Michigan State University’s Evening College has been reaching out into the community
offering lifelong learning programs for all adults. Evening College has been a program of the
MSU Alumni Association’s division of Alumni Lifelong Education since 1988. The diverse offerings
of Alumni Lifelong Education and Evening College include evening and weekend noncredit personal
enrichment courses (over 130 courses are offered every year showcasing MSU faculty and guest lecturers),
on-line courses, lifelong learning opportunities abroad, and free community exercise programs.
Paid life and annual members of the MSU Alumni Association receive program discounts.
What programs are offered through Alumni Lifelong Education/Evening College?
- Every year Alumni Lifelong Education’s Evening College offers a Fall and Spring semester of
adult noncredit personal enrichment courses. Courses are taught at the university level by
Michigan State University faculty and instructors and professionals from the community.
Most courses meet on MSU’s campus with some offerings in Grand Rapids, Detroit, and local
retirement facilities. On-line courses are also offered. The diverse selection of courses
provide intellectual, social, and cultural learning experiences and vary in number of
sessions and price. All adults are welcome.
- ALE/Evening College offers a FREE community exercise program, 50 Plus Fitness for men
and women 50 years and older. This "attend when you can" program meets every Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday morning at the Meridian Mall Food Court area.
- Alumni Lifelong Education offers a two-week residential study program, Odyssey to Oxford,
every year at England’s University of Oxford. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2008, this
lifelong education program offers new courses taught by Oxford tutors every year.
Why Give to Evening College?
Did you know that those 65 and older are rapidly becoming a majority vocal public? Did
you know that those 85 and older are the fastest growing segment of our population?
Lifelong learning is now becoming a new health concept. In the future, doctors may
prescribe--along with good nutrition and exercise--lifelong learning activities for
healthy aging. Lifelong learning may become a preventative strategy for dementia and
Alzheimer's and for coping with depression and the losses that come with aging.
Please consider giving a gift to Evening College. Your gift reflects your commitment and
appreciation of lifelong education opportunities for all adults. Your gift helps Evening
College to:
- continue to offer university level and university quality adult personal enrichment
courses;
- develop and expand the diverse selection of adult courses meeting the personal enrichment
needs of adults;
- maintain competitive pricing for courses; and
- extend outreach to a larger audience.
