OVERALL GOAL: $5.4 million

The study of botany at MSU began with disaster. In 1890, the University's first Botany Laboratory, located near the current Beal Gardens, burned, destroying the work of one of MSU's greatest professors, William James Beal. Beal was the most distinguished faculty member in his day; his 40-year scientific career at MSU ranks as one of the most fruitful in our history. Though Professor Beal carried considerable clout in his day, he was unable to get his second Botany Laboratory built within the MSU Circle. Looking out his Linton Hall window, MSU President Oscar Clute saw that a load of bricks had been delivered to Beal's chosen site by College Hall within the "sacred circle," the spot where Beaumont Tower now stands. President Clute ordered the bricks delivered to a site across the Circle at Old Botany's present location.

Old Botany is approximately 17,600 square feet in size and is one of two buildings that house the Department of Economics in the College of Social Science. The building, the work of architect Edwin A. Bowd, typifies the Queen Anne style of architecture in the asymmetry of its facades and its inventive array of windows, gables, and chimneys. The building formerly housed the School of Journalism in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences before its current use by the Economics.
